Last year, we worked with a group of interested parents about the changes we were making to the Upper School grading system. Four parents met with me regularly to help me work on how best to move forward. I found particularly helpful and interesting listening to their perspectives. This year, I would like to do the same with any parent who is interested in EAB's work in teaching and learning in WELL-BEING.

Here at EAB we place a great deal of emphasis on each student's attendance and their punctuality to class each day. This is because we know that there is a very close relationship between timely attendance at school and academic success. For this reason, we carefully track and monitor each student's attendance and follow up when we are concerned.

Perhaps the greatest educationist of all time, John Dewey, stated in the early 1900s that, “We must take the child as a member of society in the broadest sense, and demand for and from the schools whatever is necessary to enable the child intelligently to recognize all his social relations and take his part in sustaining them”. The role of a school is to prepare students to participate fully in the society they will function in. However, what does this mean in today’s schools in the 21st century?

EAB chose Powerschool to replace PlusPortals for several compelling reasons. Powerschool is highly regarded in the international/IB school world due to its extensive support for customization, standards-based grading, and user-friendly, intuitive interfaces for students, parents, teachers and administrators. Additionally, we are determined to use data more effectively to inform our instructional practices and evaluate our effectiveness as an academic institution. Powerschool gives us better access to that data.

With this clarity of purpose there is more that EAB would like to offer them and there are some fantastic projects coming just around the corner! My wife and I can certainly attest to how difficult it can be to raise children. It is more so when you combine a smartphone and social media into the mix. Recently the Washington Post ran an article by Belinda Gates and her regrets of letting their children access to technology too early. Another article by The Atlantic discusses how smartphones have destroyed a generation.

There has never been a bigger force for change than technology. It has changed absolutely everything in the way we live. With such a big change we have to ensure that change is also being applied to our classrooms. It has been said many times that we are preparing the learners of today for jobs that don't yet exist. How can we make sure that we are "future proofing our learners"? What are the transferrable skills we can teach today to be prepared for tomorrow?
