April’s visit from Freedom From Chemical Dependency is a major part in our efforts to empower our students to understand the possible dangers of drug and alcohol use early in life and give them the knowledge they need to make informed choices. Included in the week-long visit is a family meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 at 5:30 PM in the Upper School iCommons. I hope to see you there. Dear EAB Grade 10 and 11 Students and Parents, We cordially invite you to the University Information Evening to be held on March 13, 2018 in the Upper School iCommons at 6:30pm. This year’s event will include information about applying to universities outside of Brazil in the countries our students most often apply to, which include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Holland and other parts of Europe. The event will be held in English.

In the next school year, the Upper School will be continuing its move to standards-based grading by adopting a new 1-7 Scale. Students will still be graded but will no longer receive a percentage grade.

In the spirit of growing MUN at the middle school level, international schools in Brazil and Chile have begun to host Middle School MUN Conferences. Our very own middle school delegation had the opportunity to attend CHIMUN, a middle school MUN conference that was held at the International School Nido de Aguilas December 7-9.

The annual December Bands and Choir Concert is happening next Tuesday, December 4th at 7:30pm. This concert will feature an eclectic mix of vocal and instrumental music ranging from classical works such as Brahms' "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" to selections from the Tim Burton film "The Nightmare before Christmas" to Christmas classics such as "Angels We Have Heard on High."

Little is of more importance to a student than making sure we provide learning experiences that further student learning, inspire improvement, and ignite passion. Therefore, a team of teachers, counselors, and leaders in the High School have been working since late October on defining the courses to be offered in the 2019-2020 school year. Next week we will begin the process of creating student schedules for August and this is where we need parent help.

The SAT is an exam many universities in the United States and some other countries around the world use as one of the factors they consider when making admissions decisions. For those students who are interested in getting personalized extra help, EAB has partnered with Higher Ground Learning, an American company that specializes in international test prep, to host an SAT prep class taught by expert instructors.

EAB has created a new upper school policy regarding Non-School Employees on campus. Non-School Employees are people working for the families of students but are not employed by EAB. Non-School Employees include personal drivers, domestic help, company or embassy employees, etc.

We would like to celebrate the success of our Grade 11 and 12 students who took the SAT in the 2017/18 academic year. The SAT is an exam taken by many students around the world who are applying to universities in the United States and other countries.

Our Grade 11 students will be presenting an independent presentation based on a number of topics in the Theory of Knowledge(TOK) syllabus. Our students have to present to their TOK teacher as part of their final assessment IB grade.

In response to parent and teacher feedback from the first semester conferences, changes have been made to the format. Specifically, families in the Middle School will have conferences split over two days.

EAB MUN is returning from what has become the annual international conference, and this year was the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago (MUNUC). It proved to be an exciting opportunity where student delegates spent the weekend in one of America’s great cities developing their abilities to cooperate and engage with peers from around the world who are equally passionate and motivated to solve global issues.

Dear Students and Parents, As you know, Physical Education is mandatory for obtaining the Brazilian diploma. If a student does not pass this subject they will compromise obtaining their diploma. For those students that practice any physical activity at EAB, the attendance will be checked by the extracurricular activities teachers and will be added to the report card.

A fundamental component as we fulfill the EAB Vision to "Positively impact the world through excellence in academics..." is the student scheduling process. This week students and parents begin a process of collaboration with EAB Faculty to create a class schedule for the 2018-2019 school year that challenges each individual with a balanced, intense learning experience.

Over the past four years we have gone through many iterations of the parent-teacher conference, from removing two instructional days so parents can schedule specific 15 minute meetings with teachers to asking parents to only schedule meetings with teachers from 3:10-4:00 p.m. after the school day is done. Though we are committed to not losing instructional days for conferences, we are not completely comfortable not having a designated day for teachers and parents to meet.

The EAB Talent Show is an event that provides the opportunity for students to perform their talents that are not usually explored inside the classrooms. An opportunity for students to give us a glimpse of what they are capable and passionate about. The event will act as a helping hand, a fundraiser for the Senior Class prom.

Dear Parents There has been some amendments made to the Assessment Policy for 2017-2018. The rationale for these changes came about from both staff and student feedback and also with the goal of supporting our students to improve academic rigour. In addition it allows our students to be more aligned with the International Baccalaureate, Brazilian Programme and Universities worldwide. In making these minor adjustments we adhered to the spirit of the underlying principles of the assessment policy while modifying the way these principles are implemented.

18, 2017 Senior Week: This week is the last for the Senior of the Class of 2017. At EAB we try to make the final days as EAB students both beautiful and memorable. Yesterday the Seniors gave back to the community by hosting a breakfast for faculty, maintenance and security and then, after a two-hour rehearsal for Saturday's graduation ceremony, enjoyed the annual tradition of the Senior Picnic.

Today (Thursday) through Tuesday, May 8, all students in Grades 6-10 will complete the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test. This test will provide important data about student progress, both on an individual and schoolwide level, that will allow us not only to measure the effectiveness of our programs but also will empower us to better individualize instruction and learning for the needs of each child.

On Thursday, April 27 the Class of 2017 will begin the IB examination period. The IB Exams are a culmination of two years of work for your sons and daughters and it is appropriate that we celebrate their efforts before the testing sessions begin. We therefore ask you to help us coordinate an IB Celebration Breakfast on Wednesday, April 26 from 9:00-9:45 a.m. In keeping with the international spirit of the IB Organization, we ask that you prepare a breakfast dish from your home country to share with the IB students, their parents and their teachers. The hope is that each family bring only enough food for 6-8 people. If all families participate we should have enough for everyone to enjoy.

As part of part of EAB's ongoing effort to empower students to lead healthy, safe and balanced lives, in April students in the Upper School will participate in a Health and Wellness program that teaches children and teenagers about wellness and personal safety. During five 45-minute sessions during Physical Education classes, the Middle School and High School Counselors, Ms. Isabel Mader and Dr. Gavin Hornbuckle respectively, will present research-based, age-appropriate lessons to help students learn about their changing bodies and brains, skills to prevent or interrupt cycles of bullying, and identify healthy and unhealthy personal behaviors and relationships.

On Thursday, March 16 the Class of 2017 will host the annual EAB Fashion Show. The event begins at 7:30 in the auditorium. The Seniors decided to use the talents of one of their classmates, Aloysio Campos de Paz, and members of the EAB Community to create a series of magazine covers (EAB Glamour) to promote the event.

Since my arrival at EAB nearly four years ago I have said many, many times that I have never known students who are warmer or more kind than those in our Upper School. I have also commented many times since my arrival about the excellence of the Model United Nations program at EAB and how our delegates are the equals of any MUN students in the world.
