Developing Number Sense

I have no recollection of learning my numbers or how to count. Nor do I remember ever not knowing. To me, numbers, their meanings, and how they work in a base-10 system have always just been there. I’m guessing the same is probably true for a lot of you. This is why we occasionally need a reminder of the sheer enormity of what goes into learning numbers.

Many children arrive in our early years program already able to rote count—“one, two, three, four, five…”—sometimes to impressively high numbers. While this skill is an important foundation, repeating the list doesn’t automatically mean a child understands what those numbers represent or how quantities work.

Along with rote counting, students begin developing subitizing, the ability to recognize a small quantity by sight without counting each item individually, like noticing three dots on a die instantly. It’s a crucial leap, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

To truly build number sense, students must master two connected milestones:

  • One-to-One Correspondence: This is the physical and mental skill of matching exactly one number word to exactly one object as you count. Young children often point haphazardly or count faster than their fingers move. To help them keep track, teachers use strategies like physically moving objects into a box or bucket one by one, or sliding beads across a rekenrek.
  • Cardinality: This is the “aha!” moment when a child realizes that the last number they say isn’t just a label for that final item—it represents the total quantity of the whole group.

Once students master counting with cardinality, they begin to understand the conservation of number, the idea that a quantity stays the same no matter how you arrange it. For example, if you lay out five green blocks spread far apart and five red blocks packed tightly together, a beginner might insist there are “more” green blocks because they take up more space. It’s only by applying one-to-one correspondence that they eventually convince themselves that five is five, regardless of layout.

All of these early steps lay the groundwork for mathematical reasoning. When children move beyond just memorizing number words to truly grasping what numbers mean, they build a solid foundation for addition, subtraction, and a lifetime of confident problem-solving.

So the next time you hear a child rattle off “one, two, three, four, five,” resist the urge to take it for granted. Somewhere beneath that simple list, a mind is quietly assembling one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, and the certainty that five is five, no matter how you arrange it. It’s the kind of everyday marvel most of us were lucky enough to forget we ever learned.
