Learning Spaces
Grace McCallum | Head of School

In a recent conference panel interview, I was asked an interesting question about what I think has changed most significantly in education since I went to school as a child. In her recent presentation to her parents, Julie Stern asked a similar question to the audience. The answers I heard from our community were anchored in the change in teaching approaches and pedagogies. These are indeed vastly different from when our generation and the generations before us went to school. Long gone are the days of fully teacher-directed classrooms. Thank goodness for that!

Interestingly, I didn’t hear our community highlight the very thing I gave as an answer to this question during the panel. While I discussed how instruction has evolved, I also spoke about how much we have learned as educators about the impact that learning spaces can have on learning, motivation, and cognitive performance in the classroom. As educators, we consider the classroom environment to be the third teacher.  Just as students learn from their teachers and each other, they also learn significantly from their environment. Just as their teachers and peers inspire them, their environment can also serve as strong inspiration.

Over summer break, we focused on upgrading our play and learning spaces. This is all to ensure that our students have access to learning environments that inspire and support them. If you haven't had a chance to see these renovated spaces in person yet, we hope you enjoy this video that highlights the work that has been done. At EAB, we are bold in vision and look forward to sharing more about how we plan to continue developing learning environments that inspire personalization, creativity, and innovation.
