Schoolwide News
If we look back on the school year through the lens of the Problems of the Month, we’ve covered a lot of interesting mathematics! Each time I choose a problem from the Dana Center’s collection, I’m struck by how one mathematical topic can be accessible to everyone while still offering a challenge to those with more mathematical experience. I love this about mathematics: there is always something for everyone, and always more we can learn.
Last month's puzzle, Miles of Tiles, explored the cross between geometry and algebra. The answers to Miles of Tiles are here.
This month’s puzzle, First Rate, focuses on rates. The Level A problem explores a game of jumping up a set of stairs, introducing the idea of comparing two different rates. Level B asks you to compare the speeds of two runners who ran different distances over different amounts of time. Level C looks at how two people working together clean up an area at a different rate than one person working alone. Levels D and E take us back to the running track, where rates are again compared across different distances.
Please let me know how First Rate goes for you! And let me know if you would like me to start giving clues in the middle of the month to help you along! Email me your solutions at tcalcagni@eabdf.br, or drop them by my office, US 19.3!
