External Portuguese Language Assessment - VUNESP
Denise Turati | Director of the Brazilian Program

Dear Parents and Students,

As part of our ongoing commitment to Portuguese language instruction, students’ academic performance, and the strong preparation of Brazilian students in the study of their mother tongue, we would like to inform you that students in the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grades take an annual external Portuguese language proficiency assessment.

This year, we are reinforcing this commitment with the aim of further enhancing our pedagogical practices and strengthening our academic excellence.

The external Portuguese language assessment is administered by Fundação VUNESP (Foundation for the University Entrance Examination of São Paulo State University), a widely recognized institution operating since 1979, whose mission is focused on the public interest and the development of education, research, and university outreach.

Since the late 1980s, Fundação VUNESP has been responsible for organizing and administering public service examinations and selection processes for various bodies of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches, as well as for autonomous agencies, state-owned enterprises, and mixed-capital companies. Each year, the institution conducts more than one hundred assessments, involving over one million candidates nationwide.

In the educational context, VUNESP has been contracted by a large number of international schools affiliated with AASB (Association of American Schools in Brazil) to plan, organize, administer, and supervise the Portuguese language proficiency assessment for students in the 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th grades.

We would also like to emphasize the importance of external assessments as essential tools for improving pedagogical practices and the school curriculum. This type of assessment provides detailed data on student performance, making it possible to identify common challenges, recognize talents, and plan more targeted pedagogical interventions, always with a focus on strengthening academic excellence.

Therefore, we count on the support of families in guiding their children regarding the seriousness and importance of taking this assessment, which will take place on the dates listed below, according to the established schedule.

We emphasize that the participation of all students in the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grades in the testing, according to the dates mentioned above, is highly recommended, as this assessment contributes significantly to monitoring students’ academic development and to the continuous improvement of the school’s educational practices. Each student must bring their computer fully charged on the scheduled day to complete the online reading and comprehension test. EAB will provide computers to 5th grade students.

We also note that, as this is an external assessment, it will not be possible to administer the tests on dates other than those previously scheduled.

We count on the support and partnership of families to ensure that students understand the importance of this moment and participate with responsibility and dedication.

We are available for any additional clarification and reiterate our commitment to continuously expanding the academic and educational opportunities offered to our students.
