In the final weeks leading up to Graduation Day 2020, EAB will celebrate each of its Seniors via the Senior Spotlight. Though many of the Senior Traditions cannot happen this year, the High School Faculty is committed to making sure each member of the Class of 2020 knows how much they have meant to this school and how proud we are of them. Today, the Senior in the spotlight is Diogo Matos.
A proud “Bull” since the age of five, Diogo mentions in his own self-reflection that he is most proud of the development of his own character transforming himself, in his own words, from “a kid, who for the most part, didn’t want…to do anything” to “a young adult who is more determined than he was before,” and he is surely right to do so. All of us at EAB would agree that Diogo has grown into an impressive, thoughtful person, his dedication and effort demonstrated in his commitment on and off the basketball court. A superb athlete, what he will most remember about his time here is“my game winning buzzer-beater shot at NR. Overtime, semifinals on the line, 65-64 EARJ, with 7 seconds left, and I get the ball and score.” Popular with both staff and fellow students alike, what Diogo will most miss at EAB, he states, is “the people that we can’t find anywhere else in the world. I am glad I got to meet my friends, and I am glad that some of these friendships will last long.”
His teachers are united in their praise of Diogo’s achievements, the word “growth” being the most frequently employed word in their thinking about him, his English teacher stating unequivocally that he is “so proud of how much” Diogo grew “as a student, a player, and a person.” His PE teacher likewise, refers to his athletic abilities and his being “a friend to all no matter the situation or time.” Finally, his Brazilian Studies teacher identifies Diogo as one who “is always respectful and polite” and alludes to her joy in seeing “how much you have grown.”
Diogo would most like to thank“my parents for always being on my side, helping me,” his“teachers, coaches and staff” for their unwavering support and “my friends for always being there for me and allowing me to have the great time that I had.”
Following a GAP year, he will be taking up a place at the University of Tampa where they have also offered him a basketball tryout. We wish all the very best with this and with whatever new paths you choose to forge for yourself, Diogo. We remain very proud of all that you have accomplished and have become!
